More Information About Laser Hair Removal
How does laser hair removal work?
A laser focuses light energy of a specific wavelength into a narrow beam just a few millimeters in diameter. The selection of wavelength for laser hair removal is important for achieving optimal results and avoiding skin damage. At the proper wavelength and energy, the laser light penetrates the skin attacking the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding tissue. Hair follicles that are in an active growth phase will be destroyed by the energy absorbed from the laser light.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The lasers used by Elements have been cleared by the FDA for permanent hair reduction. You will notice a reduction in hair growth following each laser treatment. After a sufficient number of treatments, you will likely see little or no hair growth. However, no hair removal laser can claim to permanently remove hair. Hormonal changes brought on by such events as pregnancy or menopause can produce new hair growth. Also, certain medications can cause new growth.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Laser hair removal at Elements is much more gentle on the skin and is therefore less painful than other methods of hair removal such as electrolysis, waxing, shaving and tweezing. Our Candela lasers utilize a patented cryogenic spray system that cools the skin immediately prior to each laser pulse. The cooling mist significantly reduces the sensitivity of the skin to the laser pulse and prevents excessive heating of the skin surface. Those with dark, coarse or dense hair will feel the laser energy more than those with light and thin hair. Most of our clients find the laser treatments to be easily tolerated and some actually nap during the hair removal procedure.
How many laser treatments are needed?
Usually six to ten laser treatments will be required for the best laser hair removal results. Skin color, hair color and texture, and the area being treated are some of the many factors that determine how readily the hair will be removed. Dark hair is easier to remove than light hair. Gray and white hair without pigment at the follicle cannot be removed by any laser.
Are there any side effects or risks from laser hair removal?
The most common side effect of laser hair removal is the temporary darkening (hyper-pigmentation) or lightening (hypo-pigmentation) of skin color. These risks can be greatly minimized by avoiding prolonged sun exposure or the tanning booth for one week prior and one week following your laser procedure. Sunscreen (SPF30 or better) should be applied every two hours to the laser treated area whenever outdoors. We will discuss risks, side effects and post-treatment care during your free laser hair removal consultation.
Can anyone have laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal cannot be administered if you are pregnant or currently taking certain medications that increase the photo-sensitivity of your skin. Certain medical conditions will require the prior approval of your treating physician.
What kind of lasers are used at Elements?
Elements Laser Spa utilizes top-of-the-line lasers made by Candela Corporation. Our Candela GentleLASE and GentleYAG lasers with integrated cryogenic skin cooling technology are considered by many to be the best lasers available for hair removal. The 755-nm wavelength of the GentleLASE is ideally suited for the treatment of dark hair on lighter toned skin. The longer 1064-nm wavelength of the GentleYAG is used to treat all skin colors including very dark and tanned skin. The patented crogenic skin cooling system provides the most comfortable and safest laser hair removal treatments available.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
The cost of laser hair removal in Austin has dropped significantly over the last few years as demand has grown and more competition has entered the market. How do I prepare for my laser hair removal treatment?
You will need to shave the area to be treated the day before your laser hair removal appointment. Do not remove the hair by waxing, tweezing or depilatory creams. Avoid the sun and the tanning salon seven days before and seven days after treatment. Use sunscreen if outdoors and reapply frequently. Certain medications, such as antibiotics, can increase the skin’s photo-sensitivity. You must not use these medications seven days prior to treatment. Following these simple steps and enjoy your laser hair removal experience at Elements Laser Spa!
